I was reading a seeded comment by NavChief (fellow Viner) about what it means to be a "Real American". Within the comment a fellow viner posted a link that captivated me and brought me to tears for love of my country and for The Pledge Of Allegiance". The link was a rendition of the Pledge of Allegiance by Red Skeleton. I loved his show when I was a young girl and I will always love Red Skeleton. Please click on the link and tell me what you think of this rendition.
To me, I was moved to tears for the simple explanation Red Skeleton gave of what the words of this prestigious Pledge means to me and should mean to all Americans.
I remember standing proudly in school, with my hand over my heart, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and then singing the Nation Anthem. I remember my Dad being proud to serve in the United States Navy and how he instilled in me and my siblings what it means to live in the land of the Free and the home of the Brave. He explained that the reason he had to be away was because he was deploying to a foreign country to make sure the land we lived in stayed the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. He told us that when we recite the Pledge of Allegiance, that means we are honoring our country, giving our hearts to this country and to all those who live here. He told us about what it means to be United, especially when we would get into "stop picking on me" fights. He told us United means Family. We are all family, the good and the bad. No matter what happens - United we stand which makes us indivisible - divided, there is no prosperity, no community and no family.
My Dad died from complication of a gun shot wound he got when he served in Korea. He died for the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Thank you Dad and Thank you Red Skeleton. You both were Gems of America.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and sharing what the Pledge of Allegiance means to you.
